Interview Prep Before the Job

So, you got a call to set up a job interview. Are you excited? Scared? A little of both? Don't worry. That's normal. What you need to be asking yourself is:

Now what?

Now, it's time to prepare.Interview prep time. There are four steps you can take that will make the actual interview a better experience. Not to mention that these steps will increase your chances of getting the position!

Four Steps to Interview Prep

Step 1 -

Mark the date and time on your calendar where you will not forget it or be late. Punctuality is a sign to employers that you are responsible and dependable.

Step 2 -

Learn more about the company and the position. If you are interviewing with XYZ Corp., you need to get online or go to your local library and learn as much as you can about the company before the interview. Don't memorize the information. Really make an effort to know it. Being able to intelligently discuss the company history, mission and particulars of the position will make a great impression.

Step 3 -

Dress for success. Don't wait until the day of the interview to figure out what you will wear. If you do, you will inevitably find a key component of the outfit is stained, torn or missing altogether.

Instead, carefully select the outfit well ahead of time. Try it on to make sure it fits and looks okay. This will also help you notice small tears or stains that need to be dealt with. Then, make sure the garments look their absolute best, including shining your shoes, if necessary.

For men, a good bet is a suit in a neutral color such as navy or black with a colored shirt underneath. This will look professional, but not bland. Be sure you match.

For women, the choices are broader. You can wear a nice pants suit, a skirt and jacket with a blouse or a simple dress. The choice is yours. The outfit should be sedate, with enough character to make you stand out. Avoid neons and sheer fabrics. Heels should be modest, not stiletto.

Step 4 -

Gather your paperwork. What does this mean? You want to bring a few things with you, if you have them.

One, a copy of your resume and cover letter that was sent to the employer.

Two, any letters of recommendation or writing samples that might be requested of you during the interview.

Three, a list of references, in case it is requested. This list should contain at least three references, two professional, one personal. Provide names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses.

Four, a map to the location of the interview. This one may or may not be necessary, depending on how well you know the area. On my first interview after moving to Memphis, I got so lost, but still managed to make it. Had I printed and used a map, or written good directions, I could have been a lot less frazzled.

Each of these steps, in combination with other skills, will help make the interview one that is both enjoyable and productive. You will know where you are going, what you are wearing and will have everything you need with you. No last minute scrambles or panic. That alone will make you more confident.
