Do you know the best way to conduct an online job search?
Looking for a job is an overwhelming task, especially if you approach it without a plan. This is even more the case when you search online.
Online job sites have a lot to offer, both in information and available jobs. However, if you don't know what you are looking for before you begin, it is easy to get lost.
This is the case for two reasons.
The best way to prevent this from happening is to take a few steps before you begin your online job search.
Decide what you are looking for. Is it job openings in a particular field? Or is it advice on making your resume better? Whatever it is, know before you search.
If you are looking for job postings, be sure you know the following:
When you go onto one of these sites with this information at hand, you are less likely to be taken advantage of. Of course, most job sites try to screen the postings they list, but it is impossible to screen them all and stay relevant. As a result, a few shady characters get through. Be on the lookout for them. Mostly, they will be 'get rich quick' or 'too good to be true' postings. Stay away from them.
Now that you have made the basic preparations, it's time to choose the first site you wish to explore. Some sites are general, like Careerbuilder.com or Monster.com, while others are specific to their field, such as technical writing or IT job boards.
One of the better sites for your online job search is Job.com. They offer resume distribution, help with salary information and a great deal more. Registration is free.
Wherever you choose, keep your notes handy to help you maintain focus. If you don't, you can spend hours surfing articles and postings, without getting anything accomplished.
When you find a promising posting, take the time to read it thoroughly.
If you answer yes to these questions, you can submit your resume right away. If not, figure out whether you can still justify applying for the job.
Each time you submit a resume, whether by email, online form, fax or regular mail, write it down. Include any contact information, so you can do appropriate follow-ups.
Make sure you follow the submission rules to the letter. Some firms make it unusually difficult as a way of testing your ability to follow directions. This is a good reason to consider each submission a test and make sure you pass.
Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com are at the top of the search engines.
