As a teenager, you might not think about there being a right way to quit your job. But there is. Even if you work in fast food, there are steps you should follow.
Step 1: Make sure you have another job, first.
Securing another job before leaving your current job means you won't go long without a paycheck.
Even if the only bill you have is buying gas for your car, imagine not knowing when you will be able to afford to do that. Not a fun thought, is it?
Step 2: Give proper notice to your employer.
The standard notice is two weeks.
Why? Because it gives the employer time to find someone to replace you when you leave.
If you just walk out, it will leave them scrambling for another person to work. Not the best lasting impression to create.
Sometimes you can't give two weeks notice.
Perhaps you are moving with your parents and don't have control over the timing.
Or your new employer needs you to start sooner than you anticipated.
It's fine, as long as you give some notice before leaving.
Step 3: Work out your notice.
What does this mean?
It means show up every day for the last two weeks.
It means do the job and do it well.
It means to have a mature, professional attitude.
Why follow these steps?
Why not?
You don't want to burn bridges. If you leave on good terms and conduct yourself in a professional way, you can go back to that employer for references, letters of recommendation or even another job.
Even in a field, such as fast food, where it is common for employees to quit on the spur of the moment, follow these steps.
Make yourself stand out.
Show your maturity.
And master use of the the methods that you will be expected to follow throughout your working life.
